No ‘Uptober’ Yet: Bitcoin Slips 2% in a Month That’s Historically Bullish

Bitcoin’s price retook $82,000 on Monday as choppy trading last week stunted the coin’s gains.

The biggest cryptocurrency by market cap was recently trading for close to $82,393 — up by close to 2% over the past day but still down over a seven-day period.

Bitcoin has gotten off to a slow start for so-called Uptober, a month when the cryptocurrency has typically surged: Since the beginning of October, bitcoin’s price has dropped by 2%.

U.S. investors last week cashed out of exchange-traded funds, with speculators redeeming $228.4 million in shares from the investment vehicles managed by BlackRock, Fidelity, and Grayscale, according to data from Farside Investors.

Bitcoin is often moved by investors buying shares of the U.S. ETFs. The funds give investors easy exposure to the asset via shares they can buy on their brokerage accounts.

Despite the slow October so far, analysts have said that bitcoin is now in a bull market after spending most of 2026 trading under $70,000 — well below its all-time high of $126,080.

Bitcoin’s price started rallying in August after the U.S. Treasury Department said it would more than double the size of its government debt repurchases. The coin had its best run in three years and third best August ever.

The coin’s price has recently benefited from the so-called debasement trade: when investors buy certain assets to hedge against currency being devalued. The dollar slid in value in August.

It continued to have a good September, rising nearly 6% over a 30-day period. Bitcoin in the third quarter of this year had its best three months since 2024.

After a record third quarter, will October keep the streak alive?

Strategy Keeps Buying: Third Purchase This Month Brings October Spending to $73 Million

The largest corporate holder of bitcoin, Strategy, bought another 267 BTC last week, bringing its holdings to 848,517 digital coins — worth $69.5 billion at today’s prices.

According to a Monday filing, the software company said it spent slightly more than $22 million on buying the new bitcoins.

The latest buy allowed Strategy to snap up slightly more coins than its transaction the previous week, when it spent again $22 million on 250 BTC. So far in October, Strategy has spent $73 million on buying bitcoin.

Strategy stock (NASDAQ: MSTR) was trading nearly 2% higher Monday morning New York time at about $139 per share. Over the past month, MSTR has dropped by 17%. Year-to-date, it’s down 11%.

Monday’s filing also shows that Strategy also repurchased $193.1 million of its STRC preferred stock.

Strategy has bought back its stock this year as its STRC preferred shares have traded below their $100 face value due to market volatility and index changes.

Strategy — formerly MicroStrategy — started buying Bitcoin in August 2020 as a way to generate better returns for its shareholders.

It has since spent around $64 billion on BTC, making it the largest corporate holder of the asset. Investors can buy its shares to gain exposure to the leading cryptocurrency without having to buy bitcoin themselves.

The company is now also focusing on products that pay investors yield via its STRF, STRC, STRK, and STRD preferred shares.

Strategy could face trouble soon though after Morgan Stanley Capital International last week said it was moving ahead with a proposal “to define and classify non-operating companies as ineligible for inclusion in the MSCI Global Investable Market Indexes.”

Such a move could eventually remove Strategy from the index, leading to fewer institutional investors holding the stock.

Bittensor (TAO): 2,500 slots per subnet instead of 256, and what TAO stakers need to know
Mon, 19 Oct 2026 15:42:04

Bittensor has changed the rule by which a subnet distributes its rewards. Since the release of Runtime 475 on October 7, 2026, the owners of a subnet may choose between two procedures: the existing Yuma Consensus and a new mode called Null. Under Null, no vote among many validators decides the weights any more; exactly one validator does, namely the one with the largest stake. At the same time the number of slots per subnet rises from 256 to as many as 2,500.

For holders of TAO this is no footnote from a developer channel. Anyone delegating their tokens to a validator receives their dividend on a different calculation. And anyone wanting to enter a subnet as a miner no longer needs TAO to do it under certain conditions. The price stands at $273.87 on Monday, October 19, 2026, or 244.29 euros, which is 7.3 percent below the level of a week ago.

Null Consensus: the largest stake scores alone

A subnet at Bittensor is a market of its own for one kind of computation, for language models or for image processing, say. Miners deliver results, validators score them, and the distribution of the emission arises from those scores. The score is called a weight in the protocol, and whoever may set weights thereby decides about money.

This is exactly where Null takes hold. The mode grants precisely one validator permit, to the identifier with the largest unrounded stake; in a tie it goes to the lower identifier. Only that one identifier may set, commit or reveal weights, and that also covers the routes by which an owner scores itself. It is set out that way in the corresponding pull request of the Subtensor project, which was merged into the main branch on October 6, 2026.

The consequence is a markedly shorter calculation. Under Null an epoch loads only the single weight row, skips the consensus and skips the bonds, that is the accounting of trust over time. The frozen bond stores are retained but no longer updated. If the chosen validator supplies no valid weights, the protocol distributes the miner rewards evenly across all registered identifiers.

Yuma Consensus: what the existing procedure delivers

Yuma Consensus is the procedure Bittensor has used for years to score the participants of a subnet and fix their rewards. It takes the weights of all eligible validators, forms a stake-weighted consensus from them and penalises outliers: whoever deviates sharply from the majority view loses influence. The Bittensor protocol documentation still describes it as the procedure that translates weights into rewards.

That mechanism costs computing time, and it costs it quadratically in the number of validators. Hence a subnet's capacity under Yuma sits at 256 identifiers. Null buys the higher capacity by leaving out the most expensive part of the calculation. That is a trade, not an improvement on every axis: the deviation penalty that reins in a single validator under Yuma falls away with the consensus.

2,500 slots, divided by the number of mechanisms

The 2,500 slots are not a fixed figure per subnet but a shared budget. It is divided by the number of emission mechanisms: with one mechanism 2,500 identifiers are available, with two it is 1,250, with four 625. An owner can raise the capacity only after switching to Null. The project's tests draw the line sharply; 2,500 identifiers are accepted, 2,501 rejected.

The way back is more laborious than the way out. Anyone switching from Null back to Yuma has to prune their subnet explicitly to the shared ceiling of 256 identifiers beforehand. That pruning deletes at most 64 identifiers per operation, aborts commitments already running and clears orphaned entries in limited steps. A subnet with 2,000 participants therefore does not come back in a single step.

The upshot for the projects: Null is built for large subnets with a division of labour, in which many miners deliver a clearly measurable service and the scoring leaves little room for argument. For small subnets with contested scores, Yuma remains the more robust procedure.

Fanned-out fibre-optic bundle in a distribution chamber, individual fibre ends glowing while several stay dark
Under Null Consensus every score runs through a single strand: the validator with the largest stake.

Dividends under Null: inactive identifiers are served too

Here lies the point that concerns delegators directly. Although only one identifier may set weights, all identifiers with a positive stake keep their pro-rata dividends, expressly including the inactive ones and those without a validator permit. The permission to score and the entitlement to a dividend are decoupled under Null.

Anyone who has delegated TAO to a smaller validator therefore does not lose their entitlement through the switch. What changes is influence: in a Null subnet the validator you follow no longer has a say in how the miners are scored, as long as it is not the largest. The payout then depends solely on the stake share, no longer on the quality of the scoring.

The allocation itself is computed by the protocol in whole units with wide integers, and it never exceeds the funded epoch budget. That sounds technical but has a practical side: rounding remainders that arise with many thousands of recipients do not run out of the budget.

Fee-free PoW registration: computing work instead of a TAO burn

The second part of the upgrade is the more tangible one for newcomers. Until now, entering a subnet as a miner cost a registration fee, the so-called burn: you destroy TAO to obtain a slot. The upgrade places a second route alongside it, one that the owners of a subnet can enable. Through the pow_register call, a slot arises through computing work, a proof of work.

A direct call without a tip requires neither a TAO transaction fee nor the registration burn nor the prior purchase of a security deposit. The root subnet is excluded from this. New or missing settings default to off, and expressly stored enablements are retained. The old registration routes keep their burn behaviour unchanged.

The proof is tied to the slot and not transferable. It binds the subnet, a recent historical block hash, the hotkey, the signing coldkey and a nonce. It is accepted at an age of one to five blocks. If the search takes longer, the command line fetches the latest block hash and the difficulty anchored to it every twelve seconds. A proof that has been found and then sits too long is rejected.

Burn price and PoW difficulty rise separately

The two routes do not affect each other in price. Registrations via computing work raise only the PoW difficulty, registrations via the burn raise only the burn price. Both draw on the same settings for multiplier and half-life, but they have their own price limits and their own demand.

A subnet owner can offer the burn alone, computing work alone, or both. The protocol refuses to switch off whichever route is the last one remaining; so a subnet cannot accidentally close itself to new participants. The existing rules continue to apply to the owner's cool-down and lock-up periods.

Economically this shifts entry from capital to hardware. Whoever has graphics cards and electricity pays with computing work. Whoever does not keeps paying with TAO. For the price the direction is ambiguous: less burn means less demand for TAO for registrations, more participants mean more demand for stake. Which effect prevails will only show once enough subnets have enabled the route. Anyone looking for an exchange with a European licence for that will find one in the crypto exchange comparison.

Runtime 475 to 478: how a Bittensor upgrade goes live

Between October 5 and October 13, 2026 the project published five runtime versions: Runtime 473 on October 5, Runtime 475 on October 7, a proposal for 476 and Runtime 477 on October 8, and Runtime 478 on October 13. Null Consensus and the PoW registration sit in Runtime 475; the pull request itself carries specification number 474, which received no release entry of its own. cryptoticker.io compiled this review itself on October 19, 2026, on the basis of the eight most recent release entries of the Subtensor project and the pull request named.

The interim entry for 476 is interesting because it lays open the route by which a new runtime lands on the Finney mainnet. The entry names a deployment via a two-of-two multi-signature: the build automation sets its half, after which the three-member panel has to produce the second approval. Alongside that it carries the commit, the call hash, the checksum of the runtime file and a deployment time, so that anyone can check the published file against a rebuild of their own.

For holders that is a useful yardstick. An entry with the addition “proposed” is code waiting for signatures, not a change already in effect. Anyone wanting to know whether an announced change has arrived in the network looks at the specification number the network reports, not at the headline.

Row of high-voltage pylons at night above open country, one pylon in the foreground in focus
Ten times more slots per subnet also means more computing and power load in the network.

What stays open in the pull request

The upgrade is merged and shipped, and it carries two open points in its own record. The project's owner expressly admitted a single review instance named Skeptic as a non-green check; its five findings on resource accounting remain unresolved and visible. All other checks had to pass.

Plainer still is the sentence at the end of the rationale: the accounting of the reference weights and the resource envelope of the deployment remain unchecked, and a runtime update on a shared testnet had not been submitted at that point. The owner settled on 2,500 identifiers with atomic payouts and deferred further optimisations of the reward accounting. Historical comparative costs for 4,096 identifiers are noted in the project as a historical measurement, not as a reason for the smaller capacity.

Our assessment: the capacity of 2,500 slots is documented and tested, operation at that size is not, according to the project's own record. In favour are the passed boundary tests and the successful registration without a balance; against are the five open findings on resource accounting and the missing testnet run. Anyone holding TAO should therefore read the first wave of large Null subnets as a stress test and not as a settled matter. No recommendation to buy follows from that; with TAO a total loss is possible.

TAO price week on week: $273.87, with $269 as the weekly low

The price stood at $273.87 on Monday, October 19, 2026 at around 9:50 a.m. German time, according to CoinGecko data. Over 24 hours that is 1.5 percent more, over seven days 7.3 percent less and over 30 days 6.5 percent more. The weekly high of the daily values was $295.17 on October 12, the weekly low $269.16 on October 18. Within the past 24 hours the range ran from $254.35 to $275.54.

Market value comes to $3.11 billion, which corresponds to rank 35. In circulation are 11,339,646 TAO out of a maximum of 21 million, so 54 percent. Daily turnover is $162 million and therefore a good 5 percent of market value; in that respect TAO is considerably more liquid than many tokens of comparable size. The price is 63.9 percent away from the peak of $757.60 of March 7, 2024.

As levels on the downside, the weekly low at $269 and the round mark at $250 suggest themselves, on the upside the weekly high at $295 and the $300 mark. That is an observation of the range the price has moved in over the past seven days, and not a price target. The hard ceiling of 21 million tokens makes TAO scarcer than most protocol tokens; release schedules and the running emission determine how quickly the remainder reaches circulation.

Buying TAO in Germany: the route via a licensed exchange

TAO is not a token every German platform carries. Since the end of the MiCA transition period, only licensed providers may supply crypto-asset services in Germany, and the range of thinner altcoins differs markedly from provider to provider. Before buying, first check whether your provider trades TAO at all and whether it holds a licence under the European crypto regulation; the list of licensed institutions is kept by the supervisor, not by the exchange itself.

On custody the same arithmetic applies to TAO as to other protocol tokens. If the holding sits on the exchange, you carry the provider's default risk. Anyone holding it themselves takes on responsibility for the keys. Delegated staking is the normal case at Bittensor and not a side business, because stake decides influence in the network. Anyone delegating through an exchange should establish beforehand who holds the keys in that case and what share of the reward stays with the provider.

For tax, the one-year holding period remains unchanged for 2026: anyone holding TAO for longer than twelve months and then selling pays no tax on the gain. Staking income is to be kept separate from that and runs as other income. With several exchanges and wallets the allocation of acquisition dates quickly becomes confusing; how the order counts there is set out in our piece on the FIFO method across several exchanges.

Leveraged products on TAO exist, and with a token that runs through a range of $21 in a single day they are correspondingly risky. A position with fivefold leverage is liquidated on a counter-move of 20 percent, and those 20 percent sit inside the monthly range with TAO.

Bittensor upgrade: 2,500 slots change the arithmetic for stakers

Three steps make sense now:

  1. Check which mode the subnets holding your stake run in. The mode is a setting of the owner, and it determines whether your validator's scoring still counts at all. If your stake sits with a smaller validator in a Null subnet, the dividend remains, the influence does not. If you want to change provider, compare the terms in the staking comparison first.
  2. Settle your buying route before you top up. TAO is not traded at every licensed provider, and fees for smaller altcoins are frequently above those for Bitcoin. Which institutions hold a European licence is set out in the comparison of regulated exchanges.
  3. Keep the holding period and staking income apart in your records. The disposal gain after twelve months and the running staking income are treated differently. Which tools keep the two separate is set out in the comparison of tax tools.

(As of October 19, 2026. This article is not investment advice. Prices and fee structures change; check the terms with the provider before you buy.)

Loss certificate for crypto ETNs: “must reach the paying agent by December 15 of the current year”
Mon, 19 Oct 2026 15:34:29

The loss certificate is a document your bank issues only on request, and that request has a hard expiry date. Section 43a(3) sentence 5 of the German Income Tax Act devotes a single sentence to it: the irrevocable request “must reach the paying agent by December 15 of the current year”. Reaching means arriving, not posting. So anyone holding crypto ETNs or crypto ETPs in a securities account at a German bank and sitting on a loss there decides over the coming eight weeks whether that loss will ever reduce a tax payment.

One distinction matters right at the start: this text is about crypto securities in a securities account, not about coins on a trading platform or in your own wallet. Directly held coins fall under Section 23 of the Income Tax Act with its one-year holding period, and there is neither a loss pot at the bank nor a loss certificate. Which of the two routes applies to you depends on the product in your account, and that is precisely where many tax returns come apart.

Loss certificate: what Section 43a(3) requires of the paying agent

A loss certificate is the officially prescribed statement from your bank about the size of the unsettled loss in your account at the end of the year. The law calls the bank the “paying agent” because it remits the withholding tax on investment income on your behalf. The institution retains 25 percent of every taxable gain, plus the solidarity surcharge, 26.375 percent together, and somewhat more where church tax applies.

The sequence sits in three sentences of the law that build on one another. Sentence 2 obliges the bank to offset negative investment income against positive income up to that amount within the current calendar year. If a shortfall remains at year-end, sentence 3 has it carried automatically into the next calendar year. Sentence 4 opens the alternative: on request the bank issues a certificate for that amount, and “the loss carryforward lapses in this case”. So you get the loss either as a credit at that one bank or as a document for your tax return, never both.

No particular form is required; at most brokers the request runs through the message inbox or a button in the tax settings. Irrevocable means you cannot withdraw it once sent, not even on December 16 when the market turns.

The loss offset pot sits at the bank, not at the tax office

A loss offset pot is a running account that each custodian bank keeps separately for its own customers. It collects your realised losses and deducts them from future gains at the same institution before tax is withheld. In practice banks keep several such pots, at least one for share disposals and one for all other investment income, because Section 20(6) sentence 4 of the Income Tax Act permits losses on shares to be offset against gains on shares only.

The withholding tax on investment income is a tax at source: the institution deducts it when the gain arises and remits it before the money reaches your account. That is why the state of the pot determines your tax burden at the very moment you sell. Price losses that exist only on paper change nothing about it: only what you have realised goes into the pot.

The pots do not talk to each other. A shortfall of 4,000 euros from a crypto ETN at Bank A never meets a gain of 4,000 euros from a crypto ETN at Bank B as long as no certificate is on file. Bank B retains withholding tax on its gain and remits it, Bank A carries the shortfall forward into the next year. The net result is that you pay tax on a gain matched by a loss of the same size.

Two securities accounts have long been the normal case. Anyone holding crypto ETNs in the account at their main bank and running an account at a neobroker alongside has two separate pots. The same applies to married couples without a joint exemption order: the law provides for joint offsetting only where a joint exemption order is in place.

Crypto ETN, ETP and coin: three routes, two categories of income

A crypto ETN is a bearer debt security traded on an exchange that tracks the price of a coin. Whoever buys one acquires a claim against the issuer, not a coin. Which category of income results is determined by the structure of the individual security, and the products differ markedly in that respect. We have set the three routes into a securities account side by side in a separate comparison of certificate, ETN and coin.

For the December 15 question only one thing counts: does your bank retain withholding tax when you sell? Then your security runs through the pot, and the deadline concerns you. If, by contrast, the annual tax statement carries no entry for that sale, the transaction sits outside the banking system and you declare it yourself. The overview of which crypto fund products can be traded in Germany at all shows how widely the constructions differ.

Two terms separate the cases. Monetary claims are entitlements to money, and disposal gains from them belong to investment income. A claim to delivery in kind, by contrast, is an entitlement to the surrender of an asset and does not fall under that heading. Independently of this classification, issuer risk remains with every ETN: if the issuer becomes insolvent you are left standing as a creditor, even where the security is physically backed.

The bank itself is no oracle either. The fact that an institution offers several dozen crypto ETNs for purchase says nothing about how each of those securities is treated for tax. What governs is the issuer's base prospectus and, in the end, the tax office.

Xetra-Gold and the delivery claim: the ruling behind the classification

Why some exchange-traded debt security does not fall under investment income was decided by the Federal Fiscal Court on gold, long before crypto securities existed. The ruling of May 12, 2015 in case VIII R 19/14, identical in substance to VIII R 35/14, concerned Xetra-Gold. The claimant had bought in 2008 and sold in 2011 at a gain of 18,936.76 euros.

The holding is terse: the gain from the disposal of an exchange-traded bearer debt security “which securitises a claim against the issuer for delivery of physical gold and tracks the current gold price” is at any rate not taxable under Section 20 where the issuer must use the capital virtually in full to acquire gold. Purchase and sale of the security are to be assessed like a direct purchase and sale of physical gold.

The mechanism behind it is worth two sentences, because it can be carried over to crypto. A monetary claim belongs to investment income, a claim to delivery in kind does not. Where a security securitises the claim to the surrender of an asset and is fully backed by that asset, tax law treats it like the asset itself.

Several European issuers of physically backed crypto ETPs replicate precisely that construction, and they advertise it. Whether the analogy holds is not thereby settled: there is as yet no ruling of the Federal Fiscal Court on physically backed crypto securities, the tax administration has not commented on the point in general terms, and individual banks retain withholding tax despite a delivery claim. Anyone relying on the gold line carries the burden of argument before the tax office if it comes to that.

Two accounts, one loss: the calculation that makes December 15 expensive

An example with round numbers shows the sum at stake. Suppose you sold crypto ETNs at Bank A in the spring at a loss of 4,000 euros and other crypto ETNs at Bank B in the autumn at a gain of 4,000 euros. Both transactions fall in the same calendar year and both run through the withholding tax on investment income.

Without a certificate, Bank B retains 26.375 percent of the 4,000 euro gain, that is 1,055 euros. Bank A carries the 4,000 euro loss forward into the following year. Your tax burden for this year amounts to 1,055 euros, although in economic terms you are at zero.

With a certificate from Bank A, requested by December 15, you enter both amounts in your tax return. The tax office offsets them and the 1,055 euros come back. The loss carryforward at Bank A lapses in exchange, because the law does not allow both side by side.

The sum depends on your numbers, the mechanism is always the same. Because the bank can only offset the carryforward in the following year, and then only if gains arise there at all, the certificate is worth having above all where the credit sits at a bank you will barely trade with in future. The reverse holds just as calmly: anyone running their whole portfolio at one institution need do nothing, the bank offsets by itself.

Without a request the bank carries the loss into the next year

The most common worry is the wrong one. A missed December 15 does not destroy the loss, it locks it. Under sentence 3 the unsettled amount moves automatically into the next calendar year and remains available there, with no time limit, but only at that one bank.

A second rule sharpens this. Section 20(6) sentence 5 of the Income Tax Act provides that losses from investment income subject to withholding tax “may only be offset” or reduce future income “where a certificate within the meaning of Section 43a(3) sentence 4 is on file”. Without that document the tax office cannot take such a loss into account in the assessment at all. So the route via the tax return is not available as a reserve.

Late filing is not provided for. The law names a cut-off date and no hardship provision, and the bank has no latitude to accept the request later. Anyone who realises on December 20 that they needed the certificate waits for next year.

Transferring a securities account: why sentence 6 rules the certificate out

For one case the law provides a more elegant route. If you transfer your holdings in full to another securities account, the transferring bank notifies the receiving bank, at your request, of the size of the unsettled loss. The pot moves with you. Sentence 6 makes clear in the same breath: “a certificate under sentence 4 may not be issued in this case”.

A plain order of operations follows for anyone wanting to change broker. Either you transfer the account in full and take the pot along, or you have the loss certified and declare it yourself. A partial transfer does not trigger the notification; there only the certificate remains.

Saver's allowance of 1,000 euros: the order inside the pot

The saver's allowance is the tax-free amount up to which investment income remains untaxed. Section 20(9) of the Income Tax Act sets it at 1,000 euros, and at 2,000 euros for spouses assessed jointly. It takes effect at the bank only with an exemption order.

The order of operations decides real money. The bank first offsets losses against gains and applies the exemption order only to the surplus remaining after that. Anyone with a 1,000 euro gain and a 1,000 euro loss in the same account in one year does not use up their allowance, because nothing remains after offsetting. That is no disadvantage, but it explains why an unused exemption order at year-end need not be a sign of a bad year.

An exemption order in the wrong place, by contrast, costs liquidity. If your full order sits at the bank where only losses arose, you pay tax at the other from the first euro. The tax return brings that back, but only months later.

A loaded metal file trolley in a long empty courthouse corridor with raking side light

Crypto losses under Section 23 of the Income Tax Act stay outside

Anyone holding coins directly alongside ETNs runs into a wall that December 15 does not open. Gains and losses from directly held crypto assets count as private disposals under Section 23 of the Income Tax Act. Those gains have their own one-year holding period, their own exemption threshold of 1,000 euros and their own loss circle.

Losses from private disposals may only be offset against gains of the same kind. A shortfall from selling Bitcoin inside the one-year period therefore never meets a gain from a crypto ETN, in any year and with any certificate. Which offsets are possible within Section 23 we have worked through using the example of crypto losses and share gains, and what becomes of old losses from previous years is set out in our account of the crypto loss carryforward.

One difference falls in favour of the coins. Under Section 23(3) sentence 8, losses from private disposals also reduce the gains of the immediately preceding year. There is no such loss carryback in investment income, where only the carryforward remains. Anyone who sold cryptocurrencies held privately at a loss inside the speculative period should therefore check the previous year for gains of the same kind as well. Income from staking and lending sits somewhere else again, namely in other income under Section 22 no. 3 of the Income Tax Act, and forms a third circle.

In practice that means two calculations and two forms. The banking side runs through Annex KAP and the annual tax statement, the coin side through Annex SO and your own records. Anyone mixing the two gets a query from the tax office. A tax tool for a crypto portfolio helps above all on the second side, because the bank delivers the first one finished.

Is the loss certificate worth it in your case?

Three constellations cover almost everything. First: a single securities account, losses and gains at the same institution. The bank then offsets by itself, and a request would swap a comfortable route for a cumbersome one.

Second: several accounts, a sizeable loss at one, a gain at another in the same year. This is the case the provision was made for, and here the request brings the money back with your next tax return.

Third: several accounts, a loss at one, gains nowhere. The calculation is then open. The carryforward at the bank takes effect automatically as soon as gains arise there again, and costs no effort. The certificate, by contrast, brings the loss into the tax office's loss assessment, where it stands ready independently of your banking relationship, even if you close the account later. Anyone planning to change provider is usually better served by the certificate, provided no full account transfer is pending.

Flat-rate withholding tax from 2027: what the draft bill would change about the split

The split between the bank's pot and the private disposal is up for review. A draft bill has been sitting at the Federal Ministry of Finance since September 30, 2026 that would move crypto assets into investment income under Section 20 and delete the one-year period for new acquisitions. The federal cabinet did not adopt it on October 14, and there is no new date for doing so, as we recorded in the status of the reform on October 16, 2026.

For this year the draft changes nothing. It is a working version, not law in force, and without a cabinet decision and the approval of the Bundestag and Bundesrat it does not take effect. Were it to come, directly held coins would one day move into the same system that crypto ETNs already sit in, complete with withholding tax at source and a loss pot at the bank. The December 15 deadline would then concern considerably more investors than it does today.

Our assessment: December 15 is underrated because it is not a tax deadline in the usual sense. It does not run out at the tax office but at the bank, it appears on no tax assessment, and nobody reminds you of it. Set against that, the legal position is unambiguous: Section 20(6) sentence 5 makes the certificate the condition for a loss subject to withholding tax to count in the assessment at all, and Section 43a(3) sentence 5 names exactly one day. What argues against filing the request reflexively: it is irrevocable and it deletes the comfortable automatic carryforward. Anyone running a single account gains nothing and takes on paperwork. No recommendation to buy or sell a crypto security follows from any of this, and a total loss remains possible with every one of these products.

Loss certificate: after December 15 the loss stays in the pot

  1. Count your securities accounts. For every account holding crypto securities, open your broker's running loss overview and note the loss pot and the realised gains. Only where the shortfall and the surplus are spread across different institutions is the request an issue at all. How differently the providers present that overview is shown by the broker comparison.
  2. File the request in good time. Send the request for a loss certificate so that it has arrived at the bank before December 15, and keep the acknowledgement of receipt. Plan a few days of buffer, because the date of arrival counts and not the date of sending. Anyone wanting to change provider while doing so should check in the overview of trading venues beforehand whether a full account transfer is the better route.
  3. Keep the two calculations apart. File the banking side with the annual tax statement and Annex KAP separately from the coin side with Annex SO. A tax tool or portfolio tracker takes over the record-keeping for directly held coins, for which no bank issues you anything.

You can read the wording of the provision yourself: the governing sentence is in Section 43a(3) of the German Income Tax Act, sentence 5.

Bitcoin price prediction: dominance at 60.2 percent, Polkadot down 13 percent: which levels decide now
Mon, 19 Oct 2026 15:27:05

Bitcoin stands at $82,523 at midday on Monday, October 19, which puts it 0.76 percent above yesterday's level. Over the week, 1.38 percent is missing. That sounds like a quiet market, but it is half the story: over the same period Ethereum lost 5.31 percent, Solana 6.19 percent, XRP 7.22 percent and Polkadot 13.12 percent. Bitcoin's share of the entire crypto market, known as dominance, has risen to 60.2 percent as a result. For your portfolio that means the weighting has shifted without you placing a single order. Where the price can point on a horizon of months is set out in our Bitcoin price prediction.

Bitcoin at $82,523: the numbers from Monday midday

All prices in this section come from CoinGecko market data, queried at midday on Monday, October 19. Bitcoin costs $82,523, Ethereum $2,422.93, Solana $105.19, XRP $1.31, Chainlink $12.10, Dogecoin $0.0796 and Polkadot $1.12. Bitcoin's market capitalisation stands at roughly $1.66 trillion, the crypto market as a whole at about $2.75 trillion.

Over the past 24 hours Bitcoin moved between $80,672 and $83,035. The low fell in the night into Monday, the high in the morning. The price is 34.5 percent away from the all-time high of $126,080.

What Bitcoin dominance of 60.2 percent actually measures

Bitcoin dominance is the share of Bitcoin's market capitalisation in the market capitalisation of all cryptocurrencies combined. In arithmetic terms that is $1.66 trillion divided by $2.75 trillion, so a little over 60 percent. There is nothing more to it, and that is precisely where the most common misreading lies.

A fraction has a numerator and a denominator. It grows when the numerator grows, and it grows just the same when the denominator shrinks. A rising dominance therefore says nothing about whether fresh money has flowed into Bitcoin. The figure only says that Bitcoin has held its price relatively better than the rest of the market.

Long row of dark dominoes on a metal surface, the front pieces fallen over, a heavy piece at the start of the row still standing upright
When liquidity thins out, the row falls from back to front: the small names first, then the large ones.

Why dominance rises without money flowing into Bitcoin

The mechanism can be worked through with this week's numbers. Bitcoin lost 1.38 percent, the broad market considerably more. When the denominator falls faster than the numerator, the quotient rises even though both sides are down. That is exactly what happened this week.

Behind it sits a liquidity effect that traders know well. At Monday midday Bitcoin has roughly $27 billion in daily turnover, Polkadot $137 million, Shiba Inu $49 million. Anyone wanting to unwind a larger position in a nervous market gets out of Bitcoin with little price concession. In a name with one two-hundredth of that turnover, the same sale moves the price far more. So the small names are not falling because their projects have got worse, but because they are sold first and hardest as soon as investors cut risk.

This reading has a practical consequence. High dominance is not a signal that Bitcoin is being bought. The metric is a measure of how broad the market's appetite for risk currently is. If it falls again because altcoins rise more strongly, that speaks for confidence. If it rises, as now, in a falling overall market, it is a measure of outflow.

The weekly scorecard: Bitcoin down 1.38 percent, Polkadot down 13.12 percent

The spread over the past seven days is the real finding of this week. Bitcoin gave up 1.38 percent. Ethereum lost 5.31 percent and stands at $2,422.93. Solana fell 6.19 percent to $105.19, XRP 7.22 percent to $1.31. Shiba Inu lost 8.62 percent, Dogecoin 9.38 percent and stands at $0.0796. Chainlink gave up 10.42 percent to $12.10, Polkadot 13.12 percent to $1.12.

The gap between the best and the weakest of these eight names therefore comes to 11.74 percentage points in a single week. A portfolio holding equal shares of those eight names has shifted its weighting noticeably in seven days: the Bitcoin share has grown, the Polkadot share has shrunk, without a single order.

What has changed since the Bitcoin price prediction of October 18

Our Bitcoin price prediction of October 18 dealt with mining difficulty, up 5.92 percent, and the resulting selling pressure from miners. The price stood at roughly $81,100 on the afternoon of October 18. Bitcoin has added a good $1,400, or 1.8 percent, since then.

Two things have been confirmed since. First, the support held: the low in the night into Monday was $80,672 and therefore clearly above the 30-day low of $79,806. Second, the selling pressure created by the higher mining difficulty had no visible effect on the price, because demand absorbed it. Newly added is this article's finding: Bitcoin's relative strength this week does not come from its own force, but from the weakness of the others.

The holding period runs per purchase lot, and every swap resets the clock for the quantity exchanged.

Holding period and exemption threshold: what a rebalance triggers under Section 23 of the German Income Tax Act

This is where the shift in dominance becomes a question for the tax office. Rebalancing means bringing a portfolio that has drifted out of balance back to its target weighting by swapping, selling Bitcoin and buying Polkadot, for example. For tax purposes every such swap is a private disposal under Section 23 of the German Income Tax Act.

Two figures hang on this that you should know. Under Section 23(1) sentence 1 no. 2 of the Act, a gain stays tax-free if more than one year lies between acquisition and disposal. And under Section 23(3), gains from private disposals stay tax-free if the total gain in the calendar year remains below the exemption threshold named there; since the 2024 assessment period that is 1,000 euros. An exemption threshold is not an allowance: once it is exceeded, the entire gain is taxable, not merely the excess.

The holding period does not run for your portfolio as a whole, but for each individual purchase lot. Someone who bought in May and topped up in August holds two lots with two different reference dates. If you now sell part of it, the first-in-first-out view per wallet generally applies: the oldest lot counts as sold first. A rebalance in October can therefore hit a lot that would have become tax-free in December. Which software keeps those lots properly apart is shown in our overview of crypto tax software and portfolio trackers.

These levels carry the Bitcoin price up and down

On the upside the first hurdle sits at $83,035. That was the daily high of Monday morning, and the price was turned away a second time at $83,015 around midday. Two attempts at the same spot within a few hours turn a number into a level. Above that, at a distance, follows the 30-day high of $87,330.

The middle of the monthly range is the remarkable part. Between the 30-day high of $87,330 and the 30-day low of $79,806, the midpoint lies at $83,568. Bitcoin currently trades below it. As long as that holds, the price is moving in the lower half of its monthly range, even when the daily balance is green.

On the downside the daily low of $80,672 carries first, below that the 30-day low of $79,806. If the price drops under that second level, the monthly range would have been left to the downside, and the previous reading of a sideways move would be settled.

What the levels mean for a rebalance

Anyone who intends to adjust their target weighting anyway has a range of just under $2,400, or roughly 2.9 percent, between $80,672 and $83,035. Inside that range, timing decides a few percentage points, while the holding period question decides the full tax rate on the gain. The tax side weighs more heavily in this case than the entry price.

Our assessment: dominance is a measure of outflow, not a buy signal

In the editorial view, dominance of 60.2 percent is currently being read wrongly. The evidence for that sits in this week's numbers: Bitcoin itself is down 1.38 percent, the entire crypto market stands at $2.75 trillion and is therefore lower than it was seven days ago. A dominance figure that rises in a shrinking market is not measuring inflow but retreat from the smaller names.

There is a serious objection to set against this: over longer periods, relative strength is a usable indication of where capital returns once appetite for risk picks up again. Bitcoin has shown this week that it tolerates selling pressure better than the rest. But anyone deriving a buy signal from that is confusing a ratio with a statement about direction. Direction is decided at the levels above: first over $83,035, then over $83,568. Below that, dominance stays exactly what it was this week, a measure of where selling came first.

Bitcoin dominance: the direction turns only above $83,035

Three steps that follow from the position on October 19:

  1. Recalculate the actual weighting of your portfolio. After a week with 11.74 percentage points of spread, the planned split is highly unlikely to still hold. A portfolio tracker shows the actual weighting and the holding periods per purchase lot in one view.
  2. Check the reference dates of the affected lots before every swap. A lot that reaches the one-year mark under Section 23 in a few weeks costs the full personal tax rate on the gain if sold today. Waiting for the reference date is worth more in many cases than a price that is 2.9 percent better.
  3. Set trading costs against the range. With a range of roughly 2.9 percent between the daily low and the daily high, differences in fees carry weight. Which providers are licensed in Germany under MiCA and what they charge per order is in the overview of the best crypto exchanges.

Mt. Gox pushes repayment to October 31, 2027: what changes for creditors
Mon, 19 Oct 2026 15:23:15

Repayment of the Mt. Gox creditors slips by another year. Nobuaki Kobayashi, the insolvency trustee, has moved the deadline for the base repayment, the early lump-sum payment and the intermediate repayment from October 31, 2026 to October 31, 2027, in each case Japanese time. The notice carries the date October 16, 2026 and sits on the official Mt. Gox announcements page; the court has approved the extension.

That has two consequences. If you hold a claim against the former exchange yourself, October 2026 is no longer running out on you, but your duty to supply documents is exactly what it was. And if you simply hold Bitcoin, the moment when the last holdings from the insolvency estate could reach the market moves back with it.

What the trustee announced on October 16, 2026

The notice is short and gives no new amounts. It states that the trustee has changed the deadlines for three types of repayment, and refers to an attached document for the detail. The date is the only new element. There is no additional repayment category, and the size of the claims does not change.

A court-appointed trustee, not a management board

Nobuaki Kobayashi is a Tokyo lawyer acting as rehabilitation trustee, that is, as administrator in a Japanese civil rehabilitation procedure. He does not act for a company that manages client money, but for a court that distributes an estate. Every change to a deadline needs that court's approval, and that is what happened here.

From 2026 to 2027: the fourth extension of the repayment deadline

The list of announcements on the trustee's site makes the pattern visible. The original plan aimed at October 2023. The deadline was then moved on September 21, 2023 to October 31, 2024, on October 10, 2024 to October 31, 2025, on October 27, 2025 to October 31, 2026, and now on October 16, 2026 to October 31, 2027. That is the fourth extension in four years.

The rhythm is the striking part: every extension arrived a few days or weeks before the old deadline expired. Anyone who waited for the date to hold this time has watched the procedure for years and received the same outcome. As a planning assumption, the cut-off that happens to be in force is therefore of limited use.

Which three repayment types the new deadline covers

The procedure has several routes along which money and coins flow to creditors. The postponement covers these three:

  • Base repayment: the basic payout on the recognised claim.
  • Early lump-sum payment: the advance flat sum for creditors who chose this route and thereby gave up part of any later top-up payments.
  • Intermediate repayment: the partial payout that sits between the base repayment and the final distribution.
  • What does not change is the ranking of the claims themselves. What has moved is the period in which the trustee may pay, not the question of who is owed how much.

The distinction matters in practice. An extended payment period is not a deferral of your own duties. Anyone who never filed complete payment details will wait in vain in the new window too.

Steel trolley loaded with files in a long dark courthouse corridor, side light falling on stacked folders
The procedure runs under Japanese insolvency law: every payout hangs on a complete file, not on the calendar.

The reason given in the notice: incomplete procedures and problems in the distribution

The trustee gives as his reason that many creditors have not yet received their repayment because procedures are incomplete or because problems arose in the distribution. That is how crypto.news reports it, having gone through the October 16 notice.

It is a remarkably sober explanation, and it shifts responsibility to a good extent onto the receiving side. Incomplete procedures arise when details are missing, when an identity check is stuck, when an account no longer exists or when an exchange cannot match a transfer. None of those cases resolves itself because a deadline moves further out.

Japanese time, not German time: where the cut-off really falls

October 31, 2027 applies in Japanese time. Japan is eight hours ahead of Germany in winter and seven in summer. A cut-off that ends at midnight in Tokyo has therefore already passed in Germany by the afternoon or early evening of the previous day.

In practice that means anyone planning to use the final days of such a deadline for late filings loses a working day without noticing. Add to that the fact that queries run through a call centre structure in Japan which has been suspended over the turn of the year in the past.

How many bitcoin the Mt. Gox wallets still hold

Caution is in order here, because the October 16 notice explicitly gives no new holdings figure and no updated number of outstanding creditors. Anyone selling you an exact wallet balance today as an official number did not take it from the procedure.

What is solid is the order of magnitude: according to the crypto.news review, the Mt. Gox holdings stood at more than 34,500 BTC in June 2026, and the 2025 announcement spoke of roughly 19,500 creditors who had already received payments. Both figures are snapshots from the past and say nothing about the position today.

Why the exact figure counts for less than the direction

For a read on the market, the order of magnitude is enough. A residual holding in the range of several tens of thousands of bitcoin is no avalanche measured against daily trading volume, but it is not a footnote either. The decisive point is that this holding now has at least twelve more months before it has to be distributed.

Selling pressure on the Bitcoin market: the picture after the delay

Bitcoin trades at around $82,800, up roughly 1.5 percent within a day. Bitcoin Cash, the second currency in the estate, stands at about $278 with a daily gain of just under 1.9 percent. The figures come from CoinGecko, as of October 19, 2026 at around 10:48 a.m. German time.

No immediate price reaction to the postponement is visible in those values, and that fits the character of the news. Deferred distribution means deferred supply. That takes pressure off the market in the short term while extending the period in which the estate hangs over the Bitcoin price as a source of uncertainty.

Anyone looking to draw a price forecast from this should take the 2024 experience along: large quantities were actually moved then, and the feared sustained slide failed to appear, because part of the creditor base was long-term oriented and did not sell immediately. A repeat is not guaranteed, but the assumption that every coin paid out will promptly be turned into cash has already proved too simple once. What stays decisive is how much of it reaches trading at all, and through which platforms.

For many creditors the new deadline is above all an extension of the waiting, not a new promise.

Tax in Germany: how a Mt. Gox payout is treated

A payout from the insolvency estate is not a simple case for tax, and the answer hangs on a single question: when do the coins count as acquired? Private disposals of cryptocurrencies fall under Section 23 of the German Income Tax Act. Gains are tax-free after a holding period of more than one year; inside the year the liability applies, with an exemption threshold of 1,000 euros for all private disposals in a given year.

Anyone who bought their coins before the exchange collapsed in 2014 is far beyond that one-year mark on acquisition. Whether the trustee's allocation changes anything about that is a matter of assessment that cannot be answered across the board, and for Bitcoin Cash it additionally raises the question of how the acquisition from the 2017 fork should be classified.

So this applies explicitly here: have your own case assessed by a tax adviser before you enter a payout in your return. What you can do straight away, regardless, is the documentation. The crypto tax software and portfolio trackers record acquisition dates, quantities and payout times in a way that lets you still prove them years later.

Custody after the payout: exchange account or your own wallet

The payouts run through exchange accounts, because the trustee does not send coins to arbitrary addresses. That puts amounts which have in some cases lain untouched for more than a decade onto a trading account first. This is the state you should deliberately end, or deliberately keep, once the credit arrives.

An exchange account is built for trading, not for long-term custody. Anyone who does not intend to sell a larger sum promptly usually separates it from the trading platform. Which devices are suitable for that, and how they differ in securing the recovery key, is a separate decision, and one to take before the credit lands.

Access to your own account is the bottleneck

After twelve years, email addresses no longer match, phone numbers have been reassigned, identity documents have expired. That is exactly where the incomplete procedures come from that the trustee cites as the reason for the delay. An expired identity document is the most common and most mundane reason for an identity check to stall.

Phishing in the trustee's name

The official site has carried a warning since October 29, 2025 about fake websites and emails posing as MTGOX or as the trustee. The guidance is unambiguous: do not enter personal data on such pages and do not reply to such emails.

A deadline extension is a gift to fraudsters, because it supplies a pretext for fresh messages. Expect emails in the coming weeks demanding a supposed confirmation of your details by a tight date. The real trustee communicates through the official portal and does not push you by email to enter login credentials. The procedural steps themselves are also in our overview of the procedure, whose cut-off date the new notice has superseded.

Mt. Gox repayment: a year more time, the same obligations

The deadline now stands at October 31, 2027. That is no reason to hurry and even less reason to relax, because the delay arises, according to the trustee, mostly where documents are missing. Three steps make sense now:

  1. Reconcile your claim status in the official portal. Payment route, proof of identity and contact details have to be current and complete. If the payout runs through an exchange account, that account must be active and verified in your name; which platforms come into question here is shown by the crypto exchange comparison.
  2. Settle custody for the day the credit arrives. Decide in advance whether the amount stays on the trading account or moves to your own wallet, and set it up beforehand rather than under time pressure. The hardware wallet comparison gives you a starting point.
  3. Document your acquisition data now. Old purchase receipts, bank statements and timestamps belong in safekeeping while they can still be found; the crypto tax software and portfolio trackers will take the matching off your hands later, and you settle the tax assessment with your adviser.

What you take from this news is above all a set of expectations. Four extensions in four years are a pattern, not a slip. Anyone factoring a Mt. Gox claim into personal financial planning should treat it as an amount with an open date, not as a payment that will certainly arrive next October.

Dogecoin: large addresses buy 600 million DOGE while daily turnover halves: why the price is still falling
Mon, 19 Oct 2026 12:25:18

Dogecoin trades at $0.0791, or €0.0705, on Monday midday, and that is despite a wave of buying by large addresses. Between October 12 and October 16, around 600 million DOGE moved onto addresses with large holdings, according to data from the analytics house Santiment. Over the same period the price did not gain: it lost 8.6 percent on a seven-day view. The explanation lies not in the buying but on the other side of the order book. Daily turnover has fallen to around $590 million, a drop of 49 percent within a day according to CoinMarketCap figures, which U.Today put down on Monday to quiet weekend trading. If you buy or sell Dogecoin today, you meet a thinner book than two weeks ago, and that changes the arithmetic of every order.

Where Dogecoin stands on Monday midday

The price sits at $0.0791, 0.36 percent below where it stood 24 hours earlier. The daily range runs from $0.0761 to $0.0801, which is 5.3 percent between low and high in a single day. Over 30 days there is a loss of 8.6 percent, over 200 days one of 12.5 percent, over a year one of 58.4 percent. Only the two-month view is up, by 3.2 percent. Market capitalisation comes to $12.37 billion, which means 12th place among all cryptocurrencies. The all-time high of $0.7316 from May 7, 2021 is 89.2 percent away. All figures come from CoinGecko, as of October 19.

600 million DOGE in five days: what Santiment measured

Santiment evaluates holdings by address class and thereby captures whether balances are shifting from small to large addresses. For the period of October 12 to 16 the firm reports an increase of around 600 million DOGE at the large addresses, as Brave New Coin reported. At Monday's price that is about $47.5 million. Measured against the circulating supply of 156.379 billion DOGE, the sum amounts to 0.38 percent of all tokens.

Those 0.38 percent are the reason the figure is smaller than it sounds. For comparison: at today's issuance of around 13.82 million new DOGE a day, which we broke down on October 18 in the article on miner revenue and the fee share, the network needs a good 43 days to pay out the same amount afresh. Five days of buying therefore absorbs less than six weeks of running supply.

One important caveat belongs with that: an address class is not an owner. Exchanges, custodians and funds hold client balances on omnibus addresses that land in the same class. An increase there can be a transfer between custodians rather than a buying decision. The shift is documented, its motive is not.

Turnover halves, and that is the real finding

Daily turnover of $590 million stands against a market capitalisation of $12.37 billion. The ratio of those two figures is called the turnover rate, and it comes to 4.8 percent: in a single day barely one dollar of market value in twenty changes hands. On October 4 daily turnover still stood at $854 million, as our article on the ETF channel recorded that day. The fall to $590 million is a drop of 31 percent in two weeks.

Turnover is the counterparty to every order. When it falls, there is less selling volume at a nearby price behind every bid, and the reverse holds too. The same order then moves the price further. That explains the 5.3 percent daily range on a day without news: it is not the news flow that is restless, it is the book that is thin.

A narrow rock ridge in the morning light, a single footpath along the crest, the flanks dropping away into fog on both sides
A narrow ridge: little room is left between the daily low and the 200-day line, and halved turnover narrows it further.

How buying works in a thin market

The mechanism shows up in two numbers. The $47.5 million that large addresses took on over five days equals eight percent of one of today's daily turnovers. Spread across five days it is around 1.6 percent of turnover per day. An order of that size, sliced over several days, runs along with the book and does not lift the price.

The same holds in reverse. On October 15 Whale Alert reported a transfer of 300 million DOGE worth about $24.1 million to an exchange. An inflow to an exchange is not a sale, but it makes the tokens sellable. If $24 million hit the book on a day with $590 million of turnover, that would be four percent of the day's volume on the supply side. In a book with $854 million of turnover it would be barely three. The difference sounds small and decides whether a level holds.

For you that matters more at execution than at the price: with turnover halved, an instant buy costs more distance from the mid price than it did two weeks ago. We measured how large the gap between instant buy and order book is for DOGE on October 11; the direction has not changed since then, the amount has. Choosing an exchange with a deep DOGE order book and working with limits costs noticeably less in a thin market than a market order does.

What has changed since October 18

Our last Dogecoin article, on October 18, had the supply side in view: 13.82 million new DOGE a day, a fee share of 0.05 percent of miner revenue. Since then the price has moved from around $0.0795 to $0.0791, practically unchanged, but the daily range has widened to 5.3 percent and turnover has fallen by almost half. Issuance remains unchanged at 10,000 DOGE per block. The only new element is the demand side: the Santiment figures for October 12 to 16 were not yet available on October 18.

Set both sides against each other and this Monday's picture emerges. At today's price, 13.82 million new DOGE a day are around $1.09 million of fresh supply, every day, without a break. The $47.5 million of buying covers 43 days of that. It is more than a footnote and less than a turning point.

The levels: $0.0761 below, $0.0878 as a line

Monday's daily low sits at $0.0761. Below that begins the area we described on October 14 in the article on the February low as the next zone of support. That level has held since, but Monday morning tested it at $0.0761, considerably closer than five days ago, when the low stood at $0.0845.

On the upside the first hurdle is the daily high of $0.0801, the round eight-cent mark. Above it follows the 200-day line, which on October 4 ran at $0.0878 by our own calculation. From Monday's price that is 11 percent away. As long as turnover stands at $590 million, the counterparty for that path is missing: a rise of 11 percent needs buyers who buy into a thin book, and that is exactly what drives the price against the buyer.

The counter-calculation: $1.09 million of new supply a day

Dogecoin has no cap on supply. The protocol pays out a fixed 10,000 DOGE per block, and at a block time of roughly one minute that gives about 5.04 billion DOGE a year. Measured against today's circulating supply of 156.379 billion, that is 3.2 percent supply growth a year. The share falls every year, because the absolute amount stays fixed while the circulating supply grows. Holding DOGE and doing nothing therefore costs around three percent of your share of the total stock each year, even if the price stays unchanged.

Alongside that stands a second figure describing the institutional part of demand. The American Dogecoin ETFs hold around $14.4 million according to SoSoValue data and have booked almost no inflows or outflows in October. Against a market capitalisation of $12.37 billion that is 0.12 percent. For investors in Germany the figure is a sentiment gauge and nothing more: these funds cannot be bought in Germany because they carry no European authorisation.

Our assessment: the buying by large addresses is a real signal, but it does not carry far in this market. The numbers above speak for that, $47.5 million of buying against $1.09 million of daily new supply and turnover halved to $590 million. Equally documented is the argument against: the same thinness amplifies every move, upwards as well as downwards. If real demand sets in, a book like this needs less capital than usual to take the eight-cent mark and the 200-day line. Betting on a recovery therefore means betting not on the buying but on turnover coming back. That is an assessment of the situation, not a recommendation to buy.

Two separate stacks of carbon-copy paper on a filing trestle under a work lamp, a closed ring binder between them, a card cabinet in the half-light behind
Separate stacks: since the guidance on the wallet-by-wallet view, each exchange counts on its own under FIFO.

FIFO per exchange: what the wallet-by-wallet view means for DOGE holdings

FIFO stands for first in, first out and means that on a sale the tokens bought first count as the ones sold first. What matters is which pool the calculation runs over. On the question of whether several exchanges are pooled together, there is guidance pointing to a wallet-by-wallet view, which we set out on the morning of October 19. Wallet-by-wallet means that each exchange and each wallet is calculated on its own, not all of them jointly.

For Dogecoin this point is more practical than for most large coins, because DOGE is traded more often and in smaller pieces. Buying the same coin on two exchanges and selling on one leaves a separate order per exchange and therefore a separate holding period. An export per exchange is not a convenience, then, but the basis of the calculation. Without a purchase record, tax advisers warn, an estimated assessment to your disadvantage is the likely outcome.

The holding period hangs on that. After a year of holding, a gain from a private sale is tax-free, and the clock runs per acquisition. Abolishing it has been weighed several times and so far not decided; we track the current state, including voting outcomes, on our page on the crypto holding period. As long as the rule stands, it is the strongest lever a private investor in Germany has at all, and it costs nothing but patience and records.

The three routes into Dogecoin and their consequences

Investors in Germany have three routes to a position in Dogecoin, and they differ markedly in tax terms. A direct purchase on an exchange with self-custody falls under private disposal: a one-year holding period, tax-free thereafter. An exchange-traded product on DOGE, in Europe an ETN or ETP, is depending on its structure a security and is then subject to flat-rate withholding tax with no holding-period benefit. The American Dogecoin ETFs are the third case and cannot be bought in Germany.

The difference is not a detail. On a gain of €1,000 after more than a year, a direct purchase leaves €1,000; a security leaves around €736 after withholding tax and the solidarity surcharge. That is the price of convenience, and it can be read for every product in the key information document before you buy.

Custody belongs to the decision. Holding the tokens yourself means carrying the risk of key management and keeping full control over the timing of a sale. Leaving them on the exchange saves the effort and makes you dependent on its solvency. Both routes are defensible; the difference belongs before the purchase and not after it.

Dogecoin at $0.0791: without turnover the buying stays ineffective

The purchase of 600 million DOGE is documented; its effect remains tied to a turnover that has halved. Three concrete steps follow from that:

  1. Place the order differently. At $590 million of daily turnover and a 5.3 percent daily range, a market order costs measurably more than a limit. Check the order book depth for your pair before buying and set the limit where volume actually sits in the book, rather than taking the market price.
  2. Document per exchange. Because the calculation runs wallet by wallet, pull the transaction export for each exchange separately and keep it. A tax tool with a portfolio tracker takes over the ordering per wallet and saves the manual work at year-end.
  3. Keep the deadlines in your calendar. Note the date for every acquisition so you know the anniversary instead of estimating it. You can follow the state of the reform debate through our running page on the holding period.

Palantir Technologies (PLTR) Stock: Climbs 5% as New Partnership Strengthens U.S. Defense Technology
Mon, 19 Oct 2026 17:32:22

TLDR

  • PLTR stock jumps 5.01% to $195.35 as Palantir unveils Knox Systems alliance.
  • Palantir and Knox target faster software rollouts for U.S. defense agencies.
  • Knox says its accelerated FedRAMP authorization process can take 90 days or less.
  • New Palantir-Knox deal targets secure cloud deployments across FedRAMP and IL5.
  • Palantir and Knox disclosed no partnership deal value or new agency contracts.

Palantir Technologies shares climbed Monday as the software company announced a partnership with federal cloud provider Knox Systems. The agreement targets faster deployment of commercial software across tightly regulated U.S. government and defense environments. Meanwhile, PLTR stock advanced 5.01% to $195.35, adding $9.32 during the trading session.

Palantir Technologies stock gains as defense partnership expands

Palantir announced the Knox agreement on Monday, adding another channel for serving federal agencies and defense programs. The companies plan to support customers operating in FedRAMP and Impact Level 5, or IL5, environments. These settings require security controls for sensitive government information and demanding defense workloads.

The partnership combines Palantir’s existing government deployment infrastructure with Knox’s cloud authorization services. As a result, commercial software developers could gain a more direct path into federal technology programs. The companies aim to reduce deployment delays while meeting the security requirements of their government customers.

Palantir has worked with software providers seeking to serve government agencies through its accredited infrastructure. Knox, meanwhile, supports more than 100 artificial intelligence and enterprise software applications across federal environments. The new arrangement brings those capabilities together without announcing contract values or specific agency purchases.

Knox Systems brings faster FedRAMP authorization process

Knox says its process can help software companies secure FedRAMP authorization within 90 days or less. FedRAMP establishes a common security assessment and authorization framework for cloud services that federal agencies use. Therefore, an accelerated review process could help developers bring eligible products to government customers sooner.

The partners also identified IL5 environments as a focus for their work. IL5 forms part of the U.S. military’s cloud security framework for certain sensitive workloads. Consequently, providers entering these environments must address requirements beyond ordinary commercial cloud deployment.

Knox chief executive Irina Denisenko described the partnership as an expansion of government software delivery efforts. Palantir business development leader Kevin Kawasaki also emphasized quicker access to mission-critical technology. Both companies presented speed and security as central priorities, although they provided no financial targets.

U.S. defense technology focus supports Palantir expansion

Federal agencies face lengthy security and procurement procedures when introducing new software into sensitive operations. These steps protect government systems, but they can delay the adoption of useful commercial tools. Palantir and Knox intend to address the deployment process rather than remove existing security obligations.

The agreement also reflects Palantir’s broader business focus on government operations and software deployment. Its infrastructure already supports applications that help organizations meet demanding federal mission requirements. Knox adds a service model centered on authorization timelines and ongoing protection for hosted software.

For Palantir, the announcement extends its reach among software companies seeking government customers. However, neither company disclosed expected revenue, new agency awards, or a timetable for individual deployments. Monday’s 5.01% stock advance accompanied the announcement, while future business contributions remain unspecified.

Binance AI Pro Goes Live: What Can It Do?
Mon, 19 Oct 2026 15:52:03

TLDR

  • Binance launched AI Pro on October 19, allowing users to create automated crypto trading strategies without coding.
  • Strategy Canvas lets desktop users review and adjust trading conditions before testing or deploying strategies.
  • Users must approve live trading, while separate accounts prevent AI agents from independently transferring funds.
  • Binance AI Pro supports spot and USD-margined futures strategies, subject to regional restrictions.
  • The free plan offers 250,000 monthly credits, while Premium provides 10 million credits for 19.99 USDC monthly.

Binance launched Binance AI Pro on October 19, allowing customers to create custom automated crypto trading strategies through written instructions. The service works through its website and app. Users can test proposed trades before committing real money.

Binance AI Pro Turns Instructions Into Strategies

Traders can choose assets, set buying or selling conditions, and define risk limits. The tool identifies missing details and builds a trading plan from their instructions. Customers need no coding skills or separate registration to use it.

On desktop, Strategy Canvas displays each stage beside the conversation. Users can change settings, remove steps, or add new ones. Mobile customers make changes through chat. Binance uses its market data, research, and selected outside sources to build workflows.

Virtual Trading Comes Before Live Orders

Recent market data showed Binance altcoin market breadth falling to 51.6%, down from more than 90% earlier in October. With AI Pro, users can test their plans using virtual funds before placing live orders.

Live trading requires separate approval. Approved strategies run inside dedicated AI Strategy Accounts, apart from customers’ main balances. Traders transfer money into those accounts manually. The AI agent cannot move funds on its own.

Customers can pause a strategy, change its instructions, or remove its trading access. Any revised version needs another approval before it starts trading. Binance says these controls follow its policy of keeping financial decisions under human authority.

More Tools and Supported Markets

The launch follows growth in other exchange products. Last week, Binance’s tokenized stock platform passed $1 billion in assets. AI Pro initially supports spot trading and USD-margined futures strategies, depending on local restrictions.

The assistant can also prepare daily reports, monitor markets and generate price alerts or signals. Jeff Li, Binance’s vice president of product, said customers can review and test workflows before approving deployment. More trading products are planned.

Pricing and Control Requirements

AI use in financial services is drawing closer attention to account permissions. On October 19, World introduced identity tools for AI agents. Binance requires customers to approve their strategies and fund dedicated accounts themselves.

Binance offers a free Standard plan with 250,000 monthly credits. Premium costs 19.99 USDC per month, offering 10 million credits and additional AI models. Both plans support paper trading and live deployment.

META Stock Faces Earnings Test After Trump’s Major Purchase
Mon, 19 Oct 2026 15:40:02

TLDR

  • Meta will release its third-quarter earnings on October 21 after the US market closes.
  • Trump’s August financial disclosure showed a Meta stock purchase valued between $5 million and $25 million.
  • Meta’s second-quarter revenue rose 28% to $60.8 billion as advertising demand supported growth.
  • Meta expects capital spending of $130 billion to $145 billion in 2026 as AI investment continues.
  • Analysts expect third-quarter revenue near $63.34 billion, while investors await updates on costs and cash flow.

Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) will report third-quarter earnings on October 21, placing META stock under scrutiny after President Donald Trump disclosed a large August purchase. Investors are weighing advertising growth against mounting artificial intelligence costs. The report follows a selloff in technology shares linked partly to AI spending concerns.

Meta Platforms, Inc., META

Trump’s Portfolio Adds Millions in Meta Shares

An October 8 financial disclosure showed an August 21 purchase of Meta shares worth between $5 million and $25 million. The transaction was the largest individual trade listed in the filing. The range does not reveal the exact amount paid.

The disclosure also detailed transactions involving other technology companies, including Nvidia. White House officials said independent financial managers oversee Trump’s investments. Nvidia expanded its Nemotron AI models last week.

Advertising Business Remains Meta’s Main Driver

Meta reported second-quarter revenue of $60.8 billion, up 28% from the previous year. Advertising impressions climbed 14%, while the average price per advertisement increased 12%. Both measures supported higher advertising revenue.

The company uses AI to recommend content and improve advertising performance across Facebook and Instagram. Meta reported 3.6 billion daily users across its apps in June, representing 3% annual growth. The figure covers several of its services.

META Stock Faces Questions Over Spending

Meta released Muse Spark Open on October 15, extending its AI tools for developers working on software tasks. However, the company has not established how much revenue newer AI products will produce. Investors also await updates on business-focused AI services.

Meta expects 2026 capital spending between $130 billion and $145 billion, including finance lease payments. Second-quarter spending reached $31.08 billion, while free cash flow fell to $784 million. Legal charges and severance payments also increased quarterly expenses.

Earnings Forecasts Shift Focus to Cash Flow

Analysts expect roughly $63.34 billion in third-quarter revenue, representing growth near 24%. They forecast earnings of around $6.60 per share, compared with adjusted earnings of $7.25 a year earlier. Last year’s reported figure included a tax charge.

Other technology companies face questions about AI investment returns. Morgan Stanley recently raised its Amazon price target, pointing to cloud demand and automated services as growth drivers. Amazon also plans further spending on computing capacity. META stock approaches earnings after weakness across technology shares.

Netflix (NFLX) Stock Nears Earnings With $64–$77 Range in Focus
Mon, 19 Oct 2026 15:24:29

TLDR

  • Netflix shares have fallen nearly 47% from their June 2025 peak, ahead of Tuesday’s earnings.
  • Options markets suggest Netflix stock could move approximately 9% following the third-quarter results.
  • BMO Capital Markets and Wedbush lowered their Netflix stock price targets before the earnings release.
  • Analysts expect Netflix revenue to reach $12.87 billion, with earnings of approximately $0.82 per share.
  • Netflix faces slower revenue growth as advertising, subscription pricing and streaming competition remain in focus.

Netflix (NFLX) shares face a test on Tuesday, October 20, when the streaming company reports third-quarter earnings. The stock closed Friday at $70.53, almost 47% below its June 2025 peak, as investors weighed slower growth and stronger competition.

NFLX Stock Card
Netflix, Inc., NFLX

Netflix Options Point to Another Price Swing

Traders expect a sharp move after the results. Short-dated options have shown implied volatility near 92.3%, compared with historical volatility of about 34%, reflecting higher prices for protection against sudden share movements.

Market estimates indicate that Netflix shares could move roughly 9% in either direction after earnings. That would place the stock near $64 or $77.

Options data also showed more calls than puts, with a reported put-to-call ratio below 0.40. Such positioning indicates demand for upside exposure, although it cannot establish which direction the stock will move.

Analysts Lower Netflix Stock Price Targets

Several analysts adjusted forecasts before the report. BMO Capital Markets reduced its price target to $125 from $135 while keeping an outperform rating. Wedbush lowered its target from $105 to $90.

Jefferies set an $85 target with a buy rating, while Huber Research downgraded the shares to sell and set a $70 target. Analysts remain divided over how quickly Netflix can increase viewing and advertising revenue.

Audience trends across digital media have also faced scrutiny. Recent Truth Social traffic estimates pointed to fewer daily users, although the figures concern a separate platform and do not measure Netflix viewing.

Earnings Forecast Tests Revenue Growth

Analysts expect third-quarter revenue of approximately $12.87 billion, up nearly 12% from a year earlier. They forecast earnings of 82 cents per share, compared with 59 cents in the previous year.

Netflix generated $12.56 billion in second-quarter revenue, representing 13% annual growth. It now expects full-year sales between $51 billion and $51.4 billion and has projected advertising revenue near $3 billion in 2026.

Competition extends beyond subscription services. A recent streaming distribution agreement involving FreeCast shows how other providers are seeking viewers through bundled entertainment and advertising-supported programming.

Technology spending remains another industry focus. Meta’s recent AI model release came as Netflix continued using technology in content production and advertising, although their initiatives serve different purposes.

Intel (INTC) Stock Rebounds, but JPMorgan Keeps $85 Target
Mon, 19 Oct 2026 15:11:26

TLDR

  • Intel stock gained about 4% in premarket trading after JPMorgan upgraded the chipmaker to Neutral.
  • JPMorgan maintained its $85 price target after Intel shares fell 36% from their June peak.
  • AMD and Micron gained around 3% each as investors returned to semiconductor stocks.
  • CoreWeave rebounded following a Goldman Sachs upgrade despite continued concerns over its borrowing costs.
  • Meta and Tesla earnings will give investors new information about technology spending and business performance.

Intel (INTC) stock rose about 4% in Monday’s premarket session after JPMorgan upgraded the chipmaker, leading a technology rebound after last week’s selloff. AMD and Micron gained 3% each.

Intel Stock Rises After JPMorgan Rating Upgrade

JPMorgan analyst Harlan Sur raised Intel to Neutral from Underweight but kept his $85 target. Intel stock had fallen 36% from its June peak, bringing the price closer to that target.

Sur cited better execution under Chief Executive Lip-Bu Tan, rising demand for AI-related processors and limited supplies of advanced chips. He still expects further losses in Intel’s server market share.

Other semiconductor shares also recovered. Nvidia shares slipped last week despite its new AI model offerings. Monday’s buying followed heavy losses across chipmakers.

The Nasdaq fell 4.5% last week, while the information technology sector lost more than 6%. Goldman Sachs said hedge funds sold technology stocks by the largest percentage on record.

Nasdaq and S&P Futures Recover From Selloff

Nasdaq-100 futures advanced 1.3% before Monday’s opening, while S&P 500 futures gained 0.5%. Dow futures fell 0.2%, leaving the rebound concentrated in technology rather than the broader market.

CoreWeave rose about 6% before the open after Goldman Sachs upgraded its shares. The company fell roughly 25% last week as investors questioned its financing costs. Recent reporting on CoreWeave’s debt tracked bond yields near 15%.

Goldman maintained that CoreWeave could finance its expansion, although it lowered its price target. The company has borrowed heavily to build AI data centers, making interest rates an important cost.

Technical levels offered another test for the rally. Nasdaq-100 December futures faced a 50-day average near 30,175, while S&P 500 futures met resistance around 7,775. Both markets retained downward trends on their daily charts.

Amazon advanced after Morgan Stanley raised its target to $350 and named the retailer a top pick. Datadog also gained on a Bernstein upgrade, while Cleveland-Cliffs rose after better-than-expected quarterly results.

Meta and Tesla will report quarterly earnings later this week. Ahead of its results, Meta’s third-quarter revenue outlook called for $61 billion to $64 billion, drawing attention to advertising sales and spending on AI.

Top Cardano Price Predictions as ADA Slips 12% in a Week
Mon, 19 Oct 2026 16:38:14

Cardano’s native cryptocurrency rebounded strongly at the start of October, climbing to a five-month high near $0.28. However, bears reclaimed control, and it now trades below $0.22, down by double digits over the past week.

Here are the next key levels market participants should monitor, along with recent price predictions from popular analysts.

What Now?

X user Sssebi recently noted that ADA has been trading below the 200-day moving average (MA) for more than a year. The analyst suggested it finally has the opportunity to bounce off it and confirm the bullish trend reversal.

“If it holds, we could see a crazy ADA pump,” they added.

Just hours later, Sssebi revealed that ADA closed the daily candle above the 200 MA, stressing that a “big bounce” would now depend on trading volume.

Crypto With Gopal and Trend Rider also chipped in. The former claimed that ADA has formed a falling wedge after a prolonged downtrend, with buyers now defending the $0.21 mark.

“A breakout above $0.23 resistance could open the door towards $0.25. ADA bulls are showing signs of life – breakout confirmation is key,” he added.

For their part, Trend Rider claimed Cardano’s native token has maintained a price floor, which briefly cracked this summer when the price plunged to about $0.14. The analyst believes a monthly close above $0.23 would confirm the floor’s reclamation and suggest the breakdown was a trap. On the other hand, a rejection would mean that old support becomes resistance.

ADA’s recent exchange netflow supports the bullish perspective. Over the past several weeks, outflows have surpassed inflows, meaning investors have continued shifting from centralized platforms to self-custody, reducing immediate selling pressure.

The Bearish Theory

About a week ago, Ali Martinez outlined several reasons ADA could be poised for a “big correction.” He started by noting that whales offloaded more than 110 million ADA in about five days.

This development increases the coins available on the open market and could trigger a price decline (assuming demand doesn’t respond accordingly). The selling spree may also spread panic across the community, prompting smaller players to cash out as well.

Martinez also mentioned the cooling network activity, with daily active addresses down more than 40%. “Fewer active addresses suggest participation is weakening while whales are selling,” he said.

At the time, the analyst identified rising channel support around $0.24, arguing that a breakdown (which later occurred) could pave the way for a drop to the channel floor at $0.21

Most recently, X user Crypto Million described ADA’s performance as “weak” and regretted canceling their short position.

Bitcoin Price Analysis: Can BTC Reclaim $84K Before Another Slide Toward $77K?
Mon, 19 Oct 2026 15:50:33

Bitcoin is attempting to stabilize after another defense of the $80K demand zone. The biggest crypto asset is now trading around $82.8K and remains below the $88K resistance area that rejected its recent advance, leaving the market between a continuation of the broader recovery and a deeper correction toward lower support.

Meanwhile, the Adjusted SOPR suggests that profit-taking remains moderate, although the metric has started to cool alongside the latest pullback.

Bitcoin Price Analysis: The Daily Chart

On the daily timeframe, BTC continues to trade within the ascending channel that has guided the recovery from the late-June lows near $58K. The sharp rally in late September carried the price into the channel’s upper boundary, which overlapped with the major supply zone around $88K. This region marks the origin of the late-January breakdown, and sellers have once again defended it, rejecting BTC twice near $88K in late September and early October.

Following the rejection, the price has retreated toward the channel’s midpoint, which is currently converging with the $80K area. Buyers have so far defended the recent lows, and holding above this region would keep the structure constructive and support another attempt toward the $85K supply boundary. A decisive breakout above the zone would be required to open the path toward the $90K region and beyond.

On the downside, the nearby notable support is the $77K order block, which formed the base of the late-September breakout. A daily candle close below the channel midpoint would likely expose this region, while a breakdown beneath it would bring the channel’s lower boundary, currently around $70K, back into focus. For now, the broader recovery structure remains intact, but the repeated rejections from supply suggest that buyers need to hold the midpoint to preserve it.

BTC/USDT 4-Hour Chart

The 4-hour chart shows that Bitcoin has formed a series of lower highs since the rejection from the $86K-$88K region in early October, with subsequent rebounds stalling near $84K. Despite this, the price remains within the short-term ascending channel, and every decline since early October has been absorbed by the $80K demand zone, which served as the consolidation base before the strong rally in late September. This zone now overlaps with the channel’s rising lower boundary, creating a meaningful support confluence.

The latest impulsive move away from this confluence has left a bullish fair value gap below the current price, suggesting that buyers have stepped in with notable strength. If this imbalance holds on a retest, BTC could extend its relief bounce toward the $84K rebound highs, followed by the $86K supply zone, where the early-October breakdown began.

Conversely, failure to hold the fair value gap would return the price to the $80K demand zone for another test. Repeated tests tend to weaken support, and a valid break below both the zone and the rising trendline would invalidate the current stabilization attempt, exposing the $75K order block. The short-term structure therefore favors a cautious recovery, but buyers still need to clear $84K level to end the sequence of lower highs.

On-Chain Analysis

The Adjusted Spent Output Profit Ratio (aSOPR), shown here through its 30-day exponential moving average on CryptoQuant, measures whether coins moved on-chain are being spent at a profit or a loss, excluding outputs younger than one hour. Readings above 1 indicate that spent coins are realizing profits on average, while readings below 1 suggest coins are being sold at a loss, a behavior often associated with capitulation phases.

The metric dropped below 1 in early 2026 and reached approximately 0.98 in February, coinciding with BTC’s slide toward the $60K region. After a brief recovery in spring, it fell below the threshold again during the June decline, before climbing steadily alongside the price since July. The 30-day EMA peaked near 1.013 in early October and has since begun to turn lower, indicating that profit realization is easing as the price retreats from resistance.

Notably, current readings remain well below the 1.05–1.08 peaks recorded during the 2024 and 2025 rallies, suggesting that profit-taking is still moderate rather than euphoric and that the market is not yet overheated. However, the metric does not by itself confirm the trend. During healthy uptrends, aSOPR tends to hold above 1 as holders refuse to sell at a loss, so a renewed drop below this threshold while BTC loses the $80K support would signal weakening conviction.

Meme Coins Face $1.4 Billion Sell-Off on Binance as Bitcoin Slides From Its Peak
Mon, 19 Oct 2026 15:49:09

Meme coins have faced more than $1.4 billion in cumulative selling pressure on Binance since Bitcoin hit its last peak, according to CryptoQuant.

The sector has taken a heavy hit amid the broader crypto market struggle.

Meme Coins Lose Ground

Bitcoin’s maximum drawdown since its October peak reached 54%, while its price now sits around 35% below that high. Meme coins have suffered even more as investors pull back from riskier assets. Unlike projects with stronger fundamentals, most meme coins rely heavily on online trends and community hype, which has left them vulnerable during the downturn.

Their share of the total altcoin market cap has now dropped below 3%, which is its lowest level. The decline points to a sharp loss of liquidity across the sector. CryptoQuant went on to explain,

“Overall, this situation reflects massive selling pressure on the riskiest segment of the crypto ecosystem. It is also a reminder that meme coins suffer the most in every correction, and that exposure to them carries a very high risk of capital loss.”

As uncertainty weighed on the crypto market, Dogecoin (DOGE) and rival Shiba Inu (SHIB) have both dropped almost 9%. dogwifhat (WIF) also fell by more than 10% over the past week. The controversial Official Trump (TRUMP) slid over 12%. Meanwhile, BONK and FLOKI suffered steeper losses as each fell more than 15% during the same period. MemeCore (M) saw the biggest drop among these tokens, as weekly losses went up to over 19%.

Hunter Biden’s LAPTOP is another example of how quickly things can change in the meme coin market. The token launched on Coinbase’s Base network on September 9 and had a wild start before suffering a steep crash. It has since lost 98% of its value.

Are Meme Coin Communities Dying Out?

The growing pressure on this sector has also sparked criticism from traders. One market commentator believes meme coins are dying because of the “toxic” trading culture surrounding them. In a recent post, Maverick blamed the Solana-based launchpad, Pump.fun, for encouraging rapid trading instead of building strong communities because many traders now hold tokens for barely a few seconds before selling, making it hard for any project to build real momentum.

The post also questioned the role of KOLs, while accusing some of promoting coins only to dump their holdings minutes later. Even tokens with genuine community support can struggle to gain traction as traders keep selling and pushing prices down. To top that, bundled launches offer little reassurance either, as insiders can eventually dump their tokens and leave other buyers facing heavy losses.

BTC, ETH, and XRP at Turning Points: Major Breakout or Deep Correction Coming Next?
Mon, 19 Oct 2026 14:35:01

The past week has been quite turbulent for Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Ripple (XRP), as they all ultimately posted losses during that period.

Analyst Ali Martinez believes these digital assets have reached pivotal points, where their next major move will likely depend on key technical structures and crucial levels. Here’s what market participants need to monitor.

BTC and ETH

The primary cryptocurrency currently trades around $82,500 (per CoinGecko) after briefly tumbling below $80K last week. Martinez said the important level now is $81,000, which marks the lower boundary of the asset’s daily rising channel.

He maintained that if buyers defend it, BTC could rebound to the structure’s mid-range at $84,000 and then to the upper barrier at $86,500. At the same time, Martinez warned that a break below $81,000 could result in a deeper decline toward $76,000.

The analyst then shifted his attention toward ETH, arguing that it has a similar test at $2,350 (the support line of a right-angled ascending broadening pattern).

Martinez thinks that a bounce from that mark could push the asset’s price toward $2,700 or even the $3,000 psychological zone. On the other hand, he added that a daily close below $2,350 could open the door to a crash to about $2,000. As of this writing, ETH is worth roughly $2,440, which supports the bullish scenario.

XRP’s Potential

Ripple’s cross-border token has lagged the market’s leaders over the past week, down 7% and currently trading near $1.32. Martinez said he is now monitoring the $1.25 level, as holding above it could complete the right shoulder of a potential inverse head-and-shoulders pattern on the 3-day chart.

However, that’s not all XRP would need to do to post a decisive breakout. The analyst maintained that the resurgence should be combined with a sustained close above $1.56, which could set the stage toward a move to $2. From the bearish perspective, losing $1.25 might result in a drop to $1.

Shortly after, the analyst assumed XRP had bottomed out. He based his theory on the fact that transaction volume on the XRP Ledger exploded several hours ago as the token’s price hovered around the $1.25 support.

“The total dollar value of coins transferred on-chain skyrocketed to $49.70 billion, coinciding with the rebound that is now taking place. This surge in on-chain activity around such a critical support level suggests that $1.25 could mark the bottom,” Martinez explained.

In conclusion, the analyst doubled down on his thesis that as long as this support holds, XRP could be on track for a rally toward $2.

JPMorgan’s JPM Coin Lands on Ethereum With Support for Transfers Across Two Networks
Mon, 19 Oct 2026 13:33:41

JPMorgan has expanded its JPM Coin deposit token to Ethereum to give institutional clients another way to move money onchain. The latest move takes it beyond Base, where the dollar-denominated token first launched in November 2025.

JPM Coin, also known as JPMD, represents deposits held at JPMorgan on a public blockchain.

JPM Coin Is Not a Stablecoin

The token allows institutional clients to make on-chain payments with greater speed and efficiency. It now supports peer-to-peer transfers across the Ethereum Virtual Machine ecosystem, including Ethereum and Base. The expansion is part of the bank’s wider effort to bring traditional financial instruments onto blockchain networks.

Commenting on the development, Emma Landriault, global head of Kinexys Labs at JPMorgan, said,

“We’ve clearly been in a year of further convergence between Wall Street and crypto. It’s not just Wall Street going to public chains, but the institutional web3 players getting more embedded and partnering with traditional financial institutions.”

The banking giant has been building its presence on Ethereum beyond JPMD. JPMorgan launched its first tokenized money-market fund on the network in December 2025, followed by a second in May 2026.

JPMorgan has also made an important distinction that JPM Coin is a deposit token, not a cryptocurrency or a stablecoin. While it uses blockchain technology, the funds remain within the bank’s regulated infrastructure. On its official website, the bank explained,

“Your funds never leave the firm’s regulated banking infrastructure. JPM Coin℠ is a new way to move and settle value using the same institutional safeguards your business already relies on.”

Expansion on Canton

The expansion of the token to the Canton Network, a privacy-focused blockchain built for financial markets, was announced in January this year. The proposed integration would let institutions issue, transfer, and redeem JPMD almost instantly within Canton.

The rollout is planned in phases throughout 2026.
